Widely considered the most popular hymn of all time, Amazing Grace was written in 1779 by English poet and clergyman, John Newton. Heavily influenced by Newton's involvement with, and ultimately rejection of, the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, the words of this hymn are filled with a message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. Amazing Grace has been recorded by thousands of musicians over the years and is considered the quinessential iconic song that represents Christian Hymnody.
